Dr. Nelson is
currently a Professor of Radiology and Vice-Chairman at Duke University Medical
Center. He previously served as the Director of the Division of Abdominal Imaging
at Duke University as well as the Director of the Frederick Phillips Magnetic
Resonance Research Center at Emory University.
Dr. Nelson has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has contributed numerous articles and chapters in books related to Abdominal Imaging. Along with James Provenzale, he co-authored the book Duke Radiology Case Review: Imaging, Differential Diagnosis and Discussion. His research interests focus on diseases of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas. This includes the optimization of CT and MRI for evaluating these organs. He has a special interest in the detection and characterization of focal and diffuse liver diseases. He has extensive experience performing image-guided interventional procedures, including radiofrequency ablation. He is an experienced educator who has presented at numerous national and international symposia and who has received Teacher-of-the-Year Awards from Radiology residents at both Emory University and Duke University.
