Dr. Zierler received both his undergraduate and medical education at Johns Hopkins University, graduating from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1976. This was followed by a residency in General Surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.

After a brief period on the faculty of the Department of Surgery at UCLA Medical School, Dr. Zierler returned to Seattle in 1984 as Chief of the Vascular Surgery Section at the Seattle Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He moved to the University of Washington Medical Center in 1992 and is currently a Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery, at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Dr. Zierler's research interests have focused on the development and clinical applications of noninvasive diagnostic techniques for vascular disease. Over the last 10 years, he has been involved in a series of projects based on the use of ultrasonic duplex scanning for screening and follow-up of various vascular problems. His current specific area of interest is the natural history of atherosclerotic renal artery disease and the results of renal artery interventions.

Dr. Zierler is married to Brenda K. Zierler, Ph.D., R.N., R.V.T. who is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Washington School of Nursing. They have four children.
