The Physician Payments Sunshine Act of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires that payments made by industry (manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and medical devices) to physicians be reported in a publicly accessible database. This has had a great impact on transactions between industry and physicians. While honoraria and reimbursements made to CME conference speakers had been excluded from this requirement CMS, over the past few months, had proposed that they now be included in the reporting. Those of us involved in CME had opposed this rule.
