Level I Obstetric Ultrasound: Required Components, Standard Planes, and Reporting

Level I Obstetric Ultrasound: Required Components, Standard Planes, and Reporting

0% Complete

Course Overview

A complete obstetric ultrasound is more than measurements and saved images. Every view should have a purpose, every measurement should be obtained from the correct plane, and every report should clearly answer the clinical question.

This course takes a practical, high-level look at the standard obstetric ultrasound examination, commonly referred to as a Level I examination. Participants will move beyond simply knowing what images are required and focus on why the correct plane matters, what makes an image technically acceptable, and how small acquisition errors can affect interpretation and clinical decision-making.

Key topics include standard head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length planes, placental location and umbilical cord assessment, amniotic fluid measurement, essential fetal anatomy, examination completeness, common imaging pitfalls, and structured reporting.

Special attention is given to recognizing when an examination is truly complete, documenting what could not be adequately evaluated, and connecting the clinical indication with the final interpretation and appropriate follow-up.

This course focuses on standard second- and third-trimester obstetric ultrasound while distinguishing the Level I examination from detailed fetal anatomy studies, fetal echocardiography, Doppler surveillance, biophysical profile assessment, cervical length evaluation, and other specialized examinations.

  2. Assess and confirm technically acceptable fetal head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length planes.

  3. Describe placental location, basic umbilical cord insertion, and amniotic fluid volume.

  4. Document essential fetal anatomy systematically and identify when the examination is incomplete.

  5. Produce a structured report aligned with the clinical indication, examination findings, and technical limitations.
